From Placement to Progression: Ben’s Journey into Industry

Starting in software development

Ben joined Doxabeta as a T Level Software Development student, expecting his placement to deepen his understanding of software and the development process.

Through project work, team collaboration and practical exposure, he began to see how much happens before development actually starts.

That became an important turning point in his placement.

Discovering business analysis

During one of Doxabeta’s Agile and Scrum workshops, Ben was introduced more deeply to the importance of understanding a problem before building a solution.

He became particularly interested in questions such as:

• What is the business actually trying to achieve?

• Who are the users and stakeholders?

• What problem needs to be solved?

• What are the requirements?

• How do teams make sure developers are building the right thing?

That shift in thinking sparked a growing interest in business analysis.

Rather than focusing only on how software is developed, Ben became increasingly interested in understanding why something should be built, what the requirements are and how those requirements are communicated to delivery teams.

Learning how delivery fits together

The placement gave Ben exposure to the relationship between business needs, requirements and software delivery.

Through Agile and Scrum activities, he developed a clearer understanding of:

• requirements gathering

• stakeholder communication

• problem definition

• user needs

• prioritisation

• collaboration between business and technical teams

• how requirements move into delivery

This helped him see business analysis as a career path that combined his interest in technology with his strengths in communication, problem-solving and structured thinking.

Building confidence through experience

The experience gave him practical examples he could draw on when discussing his skills, interests and future career direction.

Progressing into business analysis

Following his Doxabeta experience, Ben progressed into a Business Analyst role at Computacenter.

What began as a software development placement ultimately helped him discover a different path within technology — one focused on understanding problems, defining requirements and helping teams build the right solutions.
