Turning experience into ideas

A placement gives learners exposure to the workplace. An innovation challenge gives them the opportunity to use that experience differently — by identifying problems, exploring ideas and building solutions.

As part of Doxabeta’s 2025/26 programme, learners progressed from structured placement activity into practical innovation challenges designed to strengthen problem-solving, collaboration and confidence.

The aim was to move beyond observing how organisations work and give learners the opportunity to think, contribute and create.

From workplace learning to problem-solving

During their placements, learners developed experience in communication, teamwork, project delivery and professional working practices.

The Innovation Challenge built on that foundation.

Learners were encouraged to explore a real-world problem, understand the people affected by it and work together to develop a practical response.

This required them to:

  • identify and define a problem

  • research different perspectives

  • generate and evaluate ideas

  • collaborate within a team

  • organise tasks and deadlines

  • communicate their thinking clearly

  • develop and present a proposed solution

  • respond to feedback and refine their ideas

The challenge gave learners space to apply skills they had already started developing during their placement.

Learning to think differently

Innovation is not simply about having a good idea.

It requires curiosity, listening, experimentation and the confidence to question whether something could work better.

Learners were encouraged to move beyond the first solution that came to mind and think more critically about the problem they were trying to solve.

That process helped strengthen skills in analysis, creativity and decision-making while giving learners greater ownership of their work.

Building confidence through collaboration

Working on an innovation challenge also created opportunities for learners to experience different roles within a team.

Some naturally focused on research and analysis. Others became more confident presenting ideas, coordinating activity or helping the group move towards a decision.

The experience showed learners that effective teams need different strengths — and that professional contribution can take many forms.

From experience to evidence

At the end of the challenge, learners had more than a completed activity.

They had practical evidence of how they approached a problem, worked with others, communicated ideas and responded to feedback.

That evidence can support future applications, interviews and progression conversations by helping learners explain not just what they studied, but what they have actually done.

Creating the next generation of problem-solvers

Doxabeta’s Innovation Challenges are designed to connect education with the realities of work — giving learners opportunities to apply knowledge, explore new ideas and develop the confidence to contribute.

By combining placements with practical challenges, learners can move from gaining experience to actively using it.

Experience creates exposure. Innovation turns that exposure into action.
